5th floor in an old Apartment building. Lonely. Crooked he sits, a 38 year old man looking down, moving his finger over a Square shining in his Face. In the small phone-display, images from all over the world are flying by. When he was younger, he used to dream about a family, Game nights with friends. Many friends. He is a very warm and friendly person. Always helpful, when he can. Everyone describes him as the kind one. He would hold doors open for others, help out carrying grocery bags, show warm heartfelt greetings. It is a joy for him to serve others. The little interactions with other people - although it had not been many, they always were meaningful to him, filling him with joy. Since his mom died, he has not really found a lot of reasons or the energy to go out of the apartment very often. He keeps a routine for shopping to not run out of food. He works from home - for a big IT Firm. He will continue to scroll his phone for a couple more hours, until eventually, he falls asleep. Alone.

Same time. Same neighborhood. Same building. overwhelming. A 35 year old woman stands in an elevator, packed with shopping bags over her arms and stroller. The baby in her left arm starts crying. Her 3 old boy pulling on her pullover, over and over again saying „I am hungry, mom, please.“ For a split of a second she asks herself what happened to the kind man on 5th floor. He was always so helpful. Many times he had helped her moving up the shopping bags to her apartment. His Energy always had something comforting and calming for her. Recently she does not see him that much. „I am hungry, mom, please“ - her boy brings her back. The elevator door opens like a curtain of a theatre. The theatre of her life. Since she was Young she was dreaming about kids. About a family. She loves her kids over everything. But there are days, where she is not sure who or what she is in all of that - and what she could have done differently. After her older one sleeps, she lets herself fall into the bed. It’s the first minute she has for herself today. She is so exhausted. Two sentences into her book and she falls asleep. Tomorrow, everything will restart. Hopefully, without complications.

Same time. Same neighborhood. Next door. In the corner of the apartment block an old couple sits together on a dinner table. So many memories that they have lived together. So much life. Moments of happiness. Sadness. Times of joy, also challenging times. Most of their friends have died over the last years. Now, they only have each other left. Of course, their kids and grandchildren come to visit every view weeks. And the people from the nursing care institution. Many times, they have tried to build relationships with other people in the building. To start meaningful conversations that bond. No one seems to have time. OR - maybe they are too old-fashioned? Recently, it got a bit harder to read the news and feel part of the world. Many things get distant. On some days, they feel unwanted - but then they quickly remind themselves that there is also good moments. Two days ago, the little boy next door asked if they had some salt. They invited him to have a look at the railway Model they still Host in one of the rooms. It was fullfilling to See the Deep fascination in the Young Boys smile. They love kids, would like to see their own grandchildren more often. In general, they love people. They were trying to get a seat in an elderly home to have more people around multiple times - without success. They were not sick enough, they were told. Now, they only have each other. They hope, that it will stay like that for a while.

As humans, we used to live in tribes. Big families. We are used to taking care of one another. Seeing each other. Feeling each other. Taking roles for each other. Having and resolving conflicts together. Supporting each other. Being together. In big packs. Looking for each other. Like Wolfs.

Today, every third person lives alone. In big cities it’s every second. Isolated. Seperated - from each other.

WALLS

Walls were invented to protect us from stormy weather and the cold. Why is it then, that modern walls are build in a way that protects us from the very thing we need most?
